What hardware do you need to self build a pc?So you have decided to build or assemble your own pc.
Now, let us go through each type of hardware:
Case : Make sure you buy a case that is big enough for all your future needs. You have two major alternatives/choices with a case between a desktop or a tower case. This a matter of personal choice depending on where you are likely to place it. No matter what case you choose you should allow room for expandability such as spare drive bays(most cases come with three-this might not be enough - hard disk, cd writer, dvd - thats them all gone-will you want to expand in the future-second hard disk because new software programmes "eat" hard disk space?).

Power Supply : Closely linked to the case.
Power supplies weren't much of an issue until relatively recently, any random ~300W supply would do. But some recent CPUs such as the Pentium IV and the latest Athlon need special power supplies with an extra connector. Look into this before buying and think LONG TERM.
Cooling fan: Again closely linked to the case (although some will argue that it is actually more linked to the cpu) . At thi stage consider getting the best cooling fan you can and making sure it will fit the case. No point in getting a 12inch fan(exageration) and finding you only have a 2 inch hole on your case.

Never carry out any work on your computer whilst is is plugged into the mains power socket, you could cause yourself and your PC damage.
The power supply does not contain any user servicable parts and contains hazardous voltages it should not be opened-even after it has been switched off.
Many desktop and tower cases have sharp edges be careful when working inside the case of your PC.
